Sockeye Kill with a Volcano
In August 2024, I travelled to Kamchatka in the Russian Far East to photograph its magnificent brown bears at Kurile Lake, where they gather to feast on migrating sockeye salmon. I hoped to capture a bear against the dramatic backdrop of Illynsky Volcano, reflecting the region’s distinctive landscape and wildlife. After four days of waiting, unpredictable clouds and elusive bears finally aligned. As the sky briefly cleared, a brown bear appeared along the shoreline, carrying a sockeye salmon in its jaws. This rare moment brought together three defining elements of Kamchatka: its iconic bears, volcanic landscape, and abundant salmon.
