Fatherhood

Earth In Focus Photography CompetitionAnimal Behaviour

A male Jawfish performs essential mouthbrooding, cradling a clutch of thousands of developing eggs in its mouth at Blue Heron Bridge, Florida. This intimate portrait captures the intensity of the male’s dedication, as it abstains from feeding for up to two weeks to ensure the young hatch successfully. The male must constantly aerate and clean the eggs by subtly rolling the mass, a vital parental duty that underscores the species’ specialized reproductive strategy within the sandy substrate environment.
