Life Sentence
This juvenile Pileated gibbon is held captive behind a gas station in Pursat, Cambodia. Although classified as Endangered by the IUCN and legally protected in Cambodia, Pileated gibbons remain vulnerable to illegal capture and the exotic pet trade. A 2024 Mongabay investigation revealed that this gibbon was likely acquired illegally and kept without a permit. Other gibbons from the same facility had previously been transferred to a private zoo or confiscated by authorities. With declining wildlife law enforcement and increasing trafficking across South and Southeast Asia, conservationists warn that these endangered primates face growing threats despite international trade restrictions.
