Silhouette of Survival
Silhouetted by oncoming headlights, a rhino moves through dust and drifting insects at Solio Conservancy, Kenya. The main subject of this image is a southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum), photographed at night at Solio Conservancy in North Kenya. The animal is rendered entirely in silhouette, backlit by the headlights of an approaching vehicle on a return safari drive. This lighting reduced the rhino to a clean, graphic outline while illuminating the surrounding dust it had disturbed and revealing insects in flight as small points of light within the beam.
