A Dangerous Road Ahead
Near my home, a former wetland has been replaced by housing developments and barbed-wire fencing, forcing waterhens to navigate increasingly dangerous surroundings. While photographing birds, I spotted a waterhen carefully walking along the sharp wire, an alarming sight after witnessing a pigeon fatally trapped on the same fence days earlier. Fortunately, the waterhen crossed safely, but a sudden disturbance could easily have caused tragedy. This encounter highlights the unintended consequences of habitat loss and human-made barriers. Fences built to protect private property can become deadly obstacles for wildlife, reminding us of the importance of creating safer shared environments.
