Father And Son
The tiny Costasiella sp. (5 – 10 mm) are loved for their charming looks – but there’s something even more remarkable: These ‘leaf sheep’ are solar-powered, they’ve evolved to harness energy from the sun through photosynthesis. They cleverly ‘borrow’ chloroplasts from the Avrainvillea algae they feed on. Through backlighting, this image captures the tiny green orbs neatly stored within the cerata on their backs, shining in a bright green glow.
